Feeling Stressed?

Ways to Unwind

While in the hospital, parents sometimes desire a quiet place to think, pray or simply take their mind off of things – even if just for a few minutes. Whatever your needs, Children’s Harbor strives to provide you and your family with ways to unwind.

Lake Martin

For our illness camps, the Children’s Harbor campus on Lake Martin in Alexander City offers many ways for patients and their families to come together and reconnect, often outdoors, in a safe environment for children with health challenges.

Lake Views

Incredible views of Lake Martin are scattered all around the campus. Lake Martin is a favorite destination for water sports and relaxing “on the lake” – complete with unique views of wildlife. Most areas offer seating on the banks, while some also offer small beach shores and docks to explore the water even farther.

Make the most of it

When possible, visit one of the many lakeside views during sunrise or sunset. It’s a nice way to say hello to a new day or stop for a moment and be thankful for the one that’s becoming a new memory.

How to get there

While available to all guests, certain areas may be reserved for camps or private events during certain times. See a map to pick out your favorite bank view. Check with your camp coordinator or Children’s Harbor staff on specific availability.

Miniature Golf

This is not your average miniature golf course. Complete with sand traps, tunnels and rock “cliffs” on the green, everyone in your family will be challenged to score a hole-in-one! The entire course is arranged for complete access to those in wheelchairs.

Make the most of it

While you’re there, stop for a minute and take a family photo in the cedar replica of an old covered bridge.

Playground

Nestled in the woods is a wheelchair-accessible playground with soft flooring from end-to-end. Swings, slides, rock walls and bridges offer children of many ages a place to let their imaginations run wild.

Make the most of it

Take a family photo on the oversized tire swing. Part of the fun is the effort to prepare for the shot. It will take some planning to get everyone on the swing – which offers a bright promise of giggles and smiles while everyone gets “on board”.

Campfire Site

Bring back childhood memories or make news ones around a campfire on a star-filled night near the lake. It’s a great place to relax, get to know other campers, make smores and tell campfire stories.

Make the most of it

Bring a guitar or other instrument with you and offer background music or an impromptu karaoke night for the kids.
