When Bruce Pearl was looking for a cause to support early in his tenure as the Auburn Tigers’ head basketball coach, he quickly settled on Children’s Harbor. He didn’t need much persuasion to lend his name and support to a non-profit organization with such an extensive reach.
“Coach Pearl actually reached out to us,” said Vicki Tuggle, Special Events Coordinator. “He liked the idea that we touched so many groups of people and worked with so many kinds of partners that focus on children with serious illnesses and their families.”
At the Lake Martin campus, Children’s Harbor partners with more than two dozen different groups serving 4,500 long-term seriously ill children and their families, and the Family Center located at the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in Birmingham serves over 27,000 people each year.
Pearl’s decision to lend his name and launch the Fore the Children Golf Classic continues to have a tremendous impact. Nearly 30 teams filled up almost immediately for the fourth annual tournament, which was held on May 22 at Willow Point Golf and Country Club on Lake Martin.
“Coach Pearl committed four years ago that he wanted to raise a million dollars for Children’s Harbor,” Tuggle said. “Now, with the 2017 Fore the Children tournament in the books, he has reached upward of $800,000 of that goal.”
“We found Children’s Harbor and Children’s Harbor found us,” Pearl said during a recent interview. “Our friends who support us are here every year. We have a great time. We talk some basketball, and we make a difference for the kids.”
Plans are being made for next year’s tournament, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Be sure to connect with Children’s Harbor on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and watch for updates. For more information, visit auburntigers.com
