Beanie Babies bring big smiles

Now cancer free, Sydney's got a mission

Remote car race gets Caleb walking

“Sydney was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on May 15, 2009 at the age of five. She went through eleven hard months of chemotherapy and twenty-eight days of radiation.

After a hard battle, she became cancer free on May 28, 2010. Although she is no longer taking treatments, Sydney is still involved with helping children battling cancer at Children’s of Alabama. She spends time helping with her foundation called Sydney’s Coins for Courage, which encourages children and their families battling cancer through Beads of Courage.

She has also helped organize several Beanie Baby donation drives for Children’s Harbor Family Center at Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children, helping raise over 4,000 Beanie Babies for Children’s Harbor over the past several years.

During treatments, Sydney always asked to visit the Family Center for face painting, bingo, crafts, and the always fun, Beanie Baby prize machine. Sometimes, it might be the only thing that got her out of her room. Now, when visiting Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children for any reason, she always finds herself trying to win a Beanie Baby for herself or another new friend that she met at Children’s Harbor.
