Children's Harbor Welcomes Families Dealing with Rare Form of Dwarfism

Deidre Perry is a hardworking single mom with three outstanding kids: Jaylah (9), Dailon (11) and Darius (13). She has been utilizing the Family Center for about eight years now. Through the support from our programs and services, she was able to go back to school and recently became a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant.

“My kids inspire me every day and, being a single parent for quite a while, God has blessed me tremendously, especially when he brought Children’s Harbor into my life. A couple of years ago I was in Children’s Pulmonary Clinic with two of my kids when I first heard about Children’s Harbor. I was going through so much with being in and out of the hospital with asthma attacks. It was so scary because both of them would have asthma attacks at the same time. At the appointment, I was discussing with the social worker and doctor about how my children’s grades were falling because they were getting sick a lot, and they told me some of the best advice I’ve ever received, ‘We have a place for you, Children’s Harbor can help you with your needs,’” said Deidre.

Since that day, Children’s Harbor has been there for this sweet family. All three kids receive free tutoring once or sometimes twice a week, and Deidre has utlized our free counseling care and career development programs. “I started getting counseling for the things I was going through as well, and it has helped tremendously. I’ve just fallen in love with Children’s Harbor. They inspired and pushed me and saw something in me that I did not see in myself.” Through Children’s Harbor’s employability classes that focus on soft skills, resume writing, and the application and interview process, as well as the technology classes, Deidre was able to hone her skills and create a solid foundation before she went back to school.

“Those classes not only helped me a lot, but inspired me to go back to school. Janice taught me that you can do whatever you want to once you put your mind to it. The computer skills I gained from the Children’s Harbor classes were especially helpful; since I had that foundation, I was able to easily master the electronic records system in the medical assistant program. Janice really pushed me and mentored me through the journey back to school. I’d postponed it so many years, but just had faith and put my best foot forward with Janice’s guidance,” said Deidre.
